Continue Exploring

Personal Collections are a new feature of the Cleveland Museum of Art's Online Collections. You can use them

  • to assemble more complicated searches
  • to save personal collections of objects for later study (registration required)
  • to send a collection of objects to a friend, colleague, student or teacher (registration required)
  • to create presentations around objects from the online collections, annotated with your own notes, which can also be sent to someone else (registration required)

Basic use

You can make a personal collection without logging in or registering, just by using the "Add work to personal collection" control next to the image on each standard catalogue page.

These "temporary collections" can be navigated like a set of search results, but can't be saved, annotated, or shared. They will only last as long as this session.

To save your collection so that it will still be available next time you visit the site, or to share it, you'll need to login (or if you haven't done so before, register).

Registration and Login

Registration is simple and free. You will need an email address. Your email address will only be used for the purpose of operating this section of the site, and your details will not be shared with any other organisation.

If you've already made a temporary collection when you register/login, that temporary collection will automatically be saved.

Once you've logged in, all your personal collections will be available to use like search results from the list on the left-hand side of the page.

Whenever you're logged in, there are enhanced facilities for collecting objects; you can add objects to a collection from any search results page, add multiple items at a time, and choose which collection to add objects to; and you can also edit the collection from a list view, deleting items you don't want.

If at any time you forget your password, you can request a reminder to be sent to your registered email address.

Sharing Collections and Making Presentations

When you're logged in, you can also share a personal collection with one or more people, by using the form provided to email a link to the collection. You can do this even with simple collections of objects.

If you also want to make presentations out of your personal collections, choose 'advanced edit' when you're editing the collection. You will then have the ability to duplicate objects in the collection, re-order the objects in the collection, and attach your own notes to each object, and create note pages between objects.

Collections can be viewed in several ways:

  • as a presentation with your notes and just the basic tombstone of each object
  • the standard online collections "catalogue" view, with all the CMA information about the object, additional images and tools etc, with your notes if any displayed in addition
  • as a single page, with each object accompanied by your notes
