Gauguin exhibition–related program
The Artist As Itinerant
Gauguin made several journeys to “primitive” islands, first to the Caribbean and then the Pacific. His purpose was “to escape European civilization and everything that is artificial and conventional.” Two concerts explore the theme of the artist as itinerant from different angles. Paul Gauguin: Paris, 1889 runs October 4, 2009 through January 16, 2010.
This remarkable performance brings the exuberant artistry of Narasirato Pan Pipers, who live in the remote southern end of Malaita Island (Solomon Islands) in the Pacific. Their village is accessible only by canoe, boat, or overland by foot. They are proud of their Aré Aré tradition of pan pipe music, together with their exciting contemporary music featuring dance, traditional costumes, singing, wooden drums, and many unique bamboo instruments including pan pipes, thong-o-phones, and stomping tubes. Since forming in 1991 the group has astounded audiences in England, Taipei, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia, among other places. $34, CMA members $33
