Adorned with biblical or mythological scenes, boxes like these were used to store small valuables, such as jewelry or coins, and given as gifts.
On the cover of this casket are the stories of the Creation of Man, the Creation of Woman, and Cain Killing Abel. The story of Adam and Eve is on the sides. Only about 50 complete ivory caskets from this period are preserved, but only three have scenes from the life of Adam and Eve. The others are decorated with mythological scenes.
